Audi E- Tron - Techky Cars

Whether Tesla fans support it or like it or not, there are now a few new entrants when it comes to family-hauling battery-electric options. Yes, if you need third-row seating, the Audi e-Tron and Jaguar I-Pace aren’t the right choice. Let’s remember, however, that while the Tesla Model X was launched with three rows of seats as standard, that is no longer the case. To get extra seating in the current Model X, you must upgrade.
The brand with the four rings presents its first fully electric series-production model, the Audi e-Tron. From 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 5.7 seconds, a range of over 400 kilometers (248.5 mi) in the WLTP driving cycle, zero local emissions – the full-size SUV is powerful, efficient, sporty and practical for everyday driving. Its two electric motors produce up to 300 kW and combine with the electric all-wheel drive to deliver optimum performance on any terrain. A comprehensive range of charging options for at home and on the go makes electric driving convenient and effortless.

In Audi E-Tron the most innovative feature on the Launch Edition is the world-first use of two high-definition cameras in place of the traditional door mirrors offered in lesser versions. These project the view behind onto two OLED screens mounted in the doors and reduce the width of the car by 15cm. They also feature heating elements and can detect dirt.
The Audi e-Tron combines the practical requirements for an automobile with the comfort of the full-size class and the efficiency of an electric drive system.

Charging:

Using 150kW public fast chargers, which are currently uncommon, the E-Tron will be capable of charging up to 80% in 30 minutes. Audi is one of a number of car makers (including BMW, Daimler, and Ford) that have invested in charging network Ionity. Audi says the network should have nearly 1200 150kW charging points running by the end of this year and 2400 by 2020.
Where Audi does have an advantage over both the Jaguar and the Tesla is the fact that it offers the fastest of all quick-charging systems. Its CCS 150 kW fast-charging system is the quickest currently on the market (well, almost on the market), which will allow it to charge its large battery from nearly zero up to 80 percent in 30 minutes, faster than the Jaguar, Tesla, or even the upcoming all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQC SUV.
The challenge for e-Tron buyers will be to find a quick charger capable of charging at that 150 kW speed. A cooling system of flat aluminum extruded sections divided uniformly into small chambers has the task of maintaining the battery’s high-performance operation over the long term. Heat is exchanged between the cells and the cooling system beneath them via a thermally conductive gel pressed beneath each cell module. In what is a particularly efficient solution, the gel evenly transfers the waste heat to the coolant via the battery housing.

The E-Tron looks like a Q5 with a slightly different “Singleframe” grille, different wheels and a few extra styling flourishes. I’m trying to decide if too normal is good or bad. I don’t want a giant green leaf on my electric vehicle denoting the powertrain, but I would like it to look a little different than its gas-powered siblings.
The E-Tron introduces a number of new connectivity services to the Audi brand. For example, customers will be able to remotely add equipment to their E-Tron after buying the car through the MyAudi app. You’ll be able to unlock certain equipment, for example, adding a matrix beam, lane assist system or digital radio. You can buy it for a month, a year or a lifetime, although it will cost slightly more for the customer than if you’d ordered it from the beginning. The service will eventually be rolled out to other models.
It also works with a household’s Amazon Alexa voice service. Through Alexa, you can instruct the E-Tron to preheat or ask how much charge is left in the car. It also works in the other direction: the E-Tron can use smart home functions, for example, switching the lights on or specific music before you arrive home. In time, the system will have the flexibility to work with a number of voice assistants including Google and Apple, said Audi.

Motor & Performance:

The Audi e-Tron offers driving pleasure in a new dimension. With 265 kW and 561 Nm (413.8 lb-ft) of torque, the two electric motors accelerate the electric SUV from zero to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 6.6 seconds – with no hesitation and virtually silently.
The start-off performance, for example at a traffic light, is comparable to that of a sports car. The maximum drive torque is present within fractions of a second and provides enormous torque. The front electric motor, which is positioned parallel to the axle for the purpose of optimum packaging, achieves a peak output of 125 kW at 247 Nm (182.2 lb-ft) of torque. The rear, coaxially positioned motor reaches an output of 140 kW with a torque of 314 Nm (231.6 lb-ft). Two-stage planetary gearboxes with one gear range transfer the forces to the axles via the differentials.
In most cases, the Audi e-Tron mainly uses its rear electric motor in order to achieve the highest efficiency – the torque is generally distributed with a rear-axle bias. If the driver demands more power than the rear electric motor can supply, the electric all-wheel drive redistributes torque as required to the front axle. This also happens predictively even before slip occurs in icy conditions or when cornering fast, or if the car understeers or oversteers.

Verdict:

The e-Tron hides its radicalism well. It is a brave new direction for Audi and will become the vanguard of a series of e-tron–branded EVs. First impressions are promising, and the number of deposits already taken in the United States suggests that Audi's gentle approach to electrification might work well for the brand.
